What to pack for a race weekend
Updated 4 Oct 2026
Pack for noise, weather and a lot of walking: ear protection, sun cover, rain gear, comfortable shoes and your tickets sorted before you leave. Then check the track's own rules on bags and what you can bring in, because they vary.
Check the rules first
Every track and event sets its own rules, and they can change from one year to the next. Before you pack anything else, look up the event's official guidance or ask your host for it. Things that often have rules attached:
- Bag size, and whether bags must be clear
- Coolers, food and drink from outside
- Chairs, umbrellas and blankets
- Cameras with long lenses, drones and radio scanners
- Re-entry, if you plan to leave and come back the same day
If you're on a hosted trip, your host has probably done this before and may already have a list. Ask for it. You book directly with the host on their own site, so they're the right person for any question about what's included.
Ears and eyes
Race cars are loud, and you'll be near them for hours. Ear protection is the one item not to forget.
- Earplugs. Foam ones are cheap and light. Bring several pairs, since they get lost.
- Ear defenders or earmuffs. More comfortable over a long day, and easy to pull on and off. Children usually need properly fitted ones.
- A headset or radio scanner, if the event allows them and you want to hear commentary or team radio. Check the rules first.
- Sunglasses, and a spare pair if you tend to sit on them.
- Binoculars, if you'll be seated far from the action.
Sun, rain and everything in between
You'll often be outside all day with little shade, and weather at a track can turn quickly. Pack for both.
- Sunscreen, lip balm with sun protection, and a hat with a brim
- A light rain jacket or poncho that folds small
- Layers: mornings and evenings can be much cooler than midday
- A small towel or seat pad, since grandstand seats can be wet, hot or hard
- A plastic bag to keep your phone and tickets dry
If umbrellas are allowed, a compact one helps. If they aren't, a poncho does the job without blocking anyone's view.
Feet, phone and money
Race weekends involve far more walking than people expect: from the car park or shuttle to the gate, around the circuit, to the food stands and back.
- Comfortable shoes you've already worn in. Closed toes are a good idea in crowds and on uneven ground.
- Spare socks, especially if rain is possible.
- A portable phone charger. Ticket apps, maps and photos drain batteries fast, and signal can be weak in a big crowd.
- Tickets and passes, downloaded or printed, plus any parking or camping pass. Screenshot mobile tickets in case the app won't load.
- ID and a payment card. Some venues are card-only and some prefer cash, so bring a little of both.
- A refillable water bottle, if the event allows one. Staying hydrated on a hot day matters.
If you're staying at or near the track
Many race trips include camping or a stay close by. If yours does, ask your host what's provided and add what's missing:
- A head torch or small flashlight
- A warm layer for nights
- Basic toiletries, hand sanitiser and wet wipes
- Any medication you take, in your carry bag rather than your main luggage
- A small first-aid kit with plasters for blisters
Every host sets up their trip differently. Some include grandstand tickets, some offer them as an add-on, and some ask you to bring your own. Check which applies before you buy anything twice.
